Tendon injuries/tendon irritations/tendinitis

Painful restriction of mobility

The healthy interaction of numerous tendons is required for the stabilization and movement of the joints. If an injury or excess strain is present, the sequence of movements is significantly restricted.

Causes of tendon injuries or tendinitis (Inflammation)

An inflammation of the tendons often develops when people are over 40 years old. Tendinopathy describes a weakness of the tendon and often comes with tears in the tendon. The tendon could even tear easily without being overused. Tendinitis also forms quite often in younger people who practise a lot of sport. The most frequent injuries form in the shoulder (rotator cuffs), the Achilles tendon (achillodynia), the biceps (biceps tendinitis), elbow tendons (tennis and golfer elbows) or in the fingers (Quervain disease, trigger finger). Quite often the actual problem does not lie in the tendon itself. Problems with the spine, the adjacent joints, metabolic diseases like gout and diabetes or certain medicaments (fluoroquinolones) can cause problems for the tendons.

Symptoms of tendon injuries or tendinitis

  • Restricted mobility
  • Pain when moving the joints
  • Grating sensation along the tendon
  • Swelling or burning sensation (red and warm skin)

The tear of a tendon often means that it does not function any more. It is possible that you can actually hear the tearing of a tendon.

Diagnostics of tendon injuries or tendinitis

To avoid long-term damage, we strongly advise to examine the tendon irritations. We use functional tests and the so-called dynamic check with the help of ultrasound. This helps us to look along the whole tendon. If necessary, there will also be an MRI check. In case of possible tendinitis or rheumatoid issues we will ask for specific examinations to be carried out in the laboratory.

We are very happy to help you to make sure that you can get rid of your pain quickly, without operation and for as long as possible.

Conservative therapy for tendon injuries and tendinitis

Conservative therapy most often alleviates the pain. If tendons are significantly damaged or even torn, an operation is often necessary. Here, for example, peroneal tendon tears after twisting injuries of the ankle joint are not uncommon.

  • Physical therapy
  • Functional training
  • Treating with bandages/orthotics
  • Kinesio taping
  • Laser therapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Ultrasound-guided injections
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Neural therapy
  • ACP – autologous blood injections
  • Laser therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Neuromuscular training (Huber 360°) in order to train joint stability

Surgical therapy of tendon injuries and tendinitis

If the tendons are severely damaged or even torn, an operation is often called for. One example is the peroneal tendon when it is torn after twisting your ankle. Frequently the tendon has to be mended. In case the tendon is compressed (e.g. trigger finger) the tendon will be freed.
